The legend of the castle goes like this: South of Egregy, in the castle of Máré lived the valiant Máré with his new wife. In the nearby castle of Miklós in Szentlászló lived his brother, Miklós without a wife. Máré was invited to fight on the side of the King. He said good-by to his wife and asked her to be faithful to him. Years passed, but Máré did not come home. His wife believed him dead, and was happy to see the master of the nearby palace. He came more and more often to see the woman. After some time the wife of the master of the palace of Máré did not mind her words she had given to her husband. Soon she and Miklós had a beautiful daughter.

The little girl grew fast and soon she was a young girl when Máré returned home. He learned that his wife had been unfaithful to him. He besieged both palaces and had it shot with cannons. The woman died with Miklós. The girl survived, but her mother put a spell on her. The girl is a prisoner in the cellar of the palace with all her valuables and is waiting to be set free. In every 77th year, on the dawn of red Pentecost she is set free, she bathes in the creak of Malomvölgy and combs her long hair. Only the hunter who passes by on this occasion, kisses a bull, a snake, and a frog can take the spell off her. Up to now, there was no such hunter.

Sometimes the wind that blows from the direction of the valley of the palace brings the sight of the girl.
"Mild wind! Whispering breeze.
Your song should sound like a praying song!
My faith is known everywhere
And show the way for someone to me."

(Sándor Gáspár)
