We list almost 300 country houses important from the point of view of architecture and the protection of national monuments in Hungary. The quality, maintenance and the number of people visiting these is extremely diverse. In accordance with my profession as a photographer, I try to photo them as adequate as possible.
We call country houses those museums or exhibition halls that are important from the point of view of architecture and traditional interiors. They have two messages for the audience. On one hand, the techniques characteristic of the building, the forms and structure are important; on the other hand, the furnishing suggesting a certain lifestyle are interesting features.
The heydays of the foundation of country houses goes back to the 1970-80's when several of them were founded all over the country. At certain places such as Heves and Veszprém County, they were organized aptly to show the typical architecture and lifestyle of the area. At other places, individuals and not museologists initiated the creation of country houses. In many cases, the enthusiasm was stronger than professionalism. This fact left many issues for museologists open.
However, the 300 buildings managed to preserve something of our tradition: the knowledge of our ancestors, their lifestyle and interest. The country houses may be bases of strengthening identity, nurturing of traditions but also the goal of village tourism.
Our national cultural heritage including the country houses is undeniably significant. Their maintenance is now the task of the local museums as well as the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and National Cultural Heritage. When these country houses form a chain of well maintained of museums, then Hungary may apply with significant chance for the listing of these buildings in the list of World Heritage of the UNESCO. To help to reach our aim, I am trying to record the state of the above-mentioned houses. It was inspiring for me to be able to perform a useful work in which I myself rejoiced.
